H AVE A LITTLE FAITH

Robert Merrill, a baritone with the Metropolitan Opera for 30 years, was an overweight kid from Brooklyn, New York, who stuttered except when he sang. As a teenager, he had a job pushing racks of clothing in Manhattan’s garment district, which brought him past the old Metropolitan Opera House, according to his October 2004 obituary in the New York Times.

H OW WILL I KNOW IF I LIKE IT?

You won’t know absolutely, positively, until you actually try it. But you can make an informed choice:

Talk to many people in the field who actually do this work .

Talk to people who don’t have an agenda. If, for example, you’re exploring an educational program, the school’s representative will tell you why it’s a great choice. You need to hear other sides as well .

If you’re not sure about a particular direction, take it slow. If your career change entails schooling, take one class before enrolling in the entire program. See how you like the field and the school .

Shadow someone who is in the field. Sit in on their meetings, follow them around and see what a typical day is really like .
